Knight of the Realm
Today, Knighthood in England and elsewhere is bestowed upon smooth-palmed desk jockeys like judges and career civil servants. The only fortification these all-too-pleasant chaps have ever engaged with is in their after-dinner wine. But you know who else was a Knight of the Realm? Sir Lancelot du Lac.
As told by T.H. White, King Arthur envisioned an England free from feudal war and the notion that might makes right. Lancelot’s sword was the foundation for this noble vision. Ugly as all get out, he was undefeated in combat but would spare the life of any defeated man who asked for it. A hero in the best sense of the word, he was your man for leading charges, defending castles, Grail quests, and every other adventure requiring The Best In The Land. Lancelot fought inner demons and an uncertain childhood to reflect purity in every word and deed. Except, of course, for his love affair with Arthur’s Queen Guinevere, but even that was classy.
Yes, Knights of the Realm are heroes of the land, fearsome soldiers who march gallantly forward with the sparkle of Good and Right in their eyes. They bring confidence to their allies in battle, and impose unexpected misgivings about mission and purpose in their enemies. Even when they’re sleeping with the King’s wife.
These drinks, carrying Knight of the Realm ratings for taste, are to be savored and remembered. They don’t come along that often, and you best drop what you’re doing and take note when they do. This drink is the highlight of your night.
